Eat Gluten-Free In Austin: A 2016 Guide to the Best Gluten-Free Restaurants

CityGuide2016-612x300(2)

Austin, Texas is a vibrant, beautiful city in which to live, and to visit. It’s also a wonderful place in which to find delicious food, with plentiful offerings to suit anyone’s dietary preferences. Most restaurants in the city offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, with some of the city’s restaurants catering solely to one or more of these specific preferences. Naturally, since this blog is devoted to a gluten-free lifestyle, the restaurants listed below are of interest mainly to people who have, or choose, to eat gluten-free. I’ve included fast (though not necessarily fast-food) restaurants as well as more formal restaurants, to suit the needs of those have time for only a quick meal, as well as those who have time to sit and linger over a meal.

  1. Habesha and Aster’s (both Ethiopian) have plenty of gluten-free options (must ask for gluten free injera (bread), the default has wheat) —

Swift’s Attic has quite a few gluten-free options, and the staff is well versed in what is gluten-free and what is celiac-safe (the latter means no cross-contamination, since even a trace amount will harm celiac sufferer)

    • Thank you, Mark, for mentioning these Ethiopian restaurants. Aster’s even offers its gluten-free version if injera bread without charging extra, which is an extra nice service! Swift’s Attic’s gluten-free options have been noted on previous years’ AFBA gluten-free lists, as well as some independent gluten-free blogs; therefore, I decided to leave it off this list. I really should have remembered to add Habesha and Aster’s to the list I compiled. My son, who is also Celiac, loves to eat at these restaurants from time to time.

  2. Can’t have a list of desserts without Bee Cave Baking Company. Best GF cakes and cupcakes I’ve ever tasted. Wouldn’t know they are gluten free if you only tasted them.

    • Thank you, Joe, for adding Bee Cave Baking Company to the ATX gluten-free list! ATX has SO many fine gluten-free places to eat! I tried to list some places this year that haven’t been listed in years past; Bee Cave Baking Company has been mentioned in various gluten-free sources for ATX, so I didn’t include it in this list. A mention in a comment on this page, though, is a great way to point people toward those gluten-free cakes and cupcakes!
